WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
Just a couple of hours ago, when I was taking the underground back home, I found out that today is he Word's Environment Day, while I was looking at a poster.
How many others don't know that?? The government and media should have organized more events and advertisements about today...
Searching in the net I've learned that this year the theme is "Green Cities" with the slogan "Plan for the Planet!". I think the slogan and theme were well chosen and we really need to think about them and take some action on it.
During the next 25 years world will suffer a great demographic development, essentially in the urban zones, 60% of world's population will live in urban zones. Such growth creates a lot of social and environmental problems, such as ghettos, poverty, unemployment and bad city planning.
The disordered city growth has lots of effects in the environment. Cities are large consumers of natural resources and producers of waste, destroying the surrounding natural life, biodiversity and polluting water.
The slogan "Plan for the Planet!" synthetizes the major concern that authorities ought to have. There are lots situations where we can experiment the problems caused by bad city planning, such has the buildings to near the beaches in Algarve.
We all can do something relating to this day, such as fight near the authorities, and spreading, the idea for more green spaces and better care in those places.
